[Blog] More Chinks in the Armour
Written by Nevadablue on Friday, 30th Oct 2009 15:23

Whatever really happened between Roy Keane and Peter Taylor this week, the underlying issue is an implied official admittance that help is needed to get us out of the mire.

As someone else pointed out today, if a coaching appointment coincided with a marked form improvement, what would that say about the much touted Keane's position in the scheme of things?

In truth no one would care much at all if we were steadily climbing the table, in exactly the same way that people are inclined to forget that Jim Magilton has clearly benefited from John Gorman's counsel.

Given the painful current contrast in results between Portman Road and Loftus Road so far this season, what a shame that partnership wasn't given more than four months, especially as it had already shown real signs of working, not least in the swansong victory against Norwich.

At the time of Jim's departure, Simon Clegg somewhat disrespectfully commented: "We want a winner."

With QPR the form team in the Championship, and as Bernie and Flavio will tell you, it pays to know when you already have one.

We don't need Peter Taylor, we're the most Improved side in the Championship.

And with Briatore sitting in judgement on him, Jim needs to keep winning.

It would have been nice to have got Taylor but "having thought about it", reveals two things:

1) Keane still backs himself to turn things around with the team he has.

2) How long would it have lasted? Taylor might have played a part in inspiring a turn-around in form but the story would be "Keane turns the Blues around." and in the event of an improved run, most clubs seeking a new manager would have courted Taylor and we'd have lost him by next season.

Having spoken to a lot of QPR fans today - ive learnt that Magilton doesnt have overall say in transfers - this is why he is being succesful at QPR - QPR do have some brilliant players all Jim does i choose how to use them - this is something he did well at town - his signings though weren't that great!.

superblueflude - two observations about your comments about Jim's signings: -

- did he actually have overall say on transfers at Ipswich?

- unlike Mr Keane, how many of his former club players are now at QPR?

Nevadablue - Firstly of course we know Jim bought all the players he admitted that himself - secondly no formar players are - why because the football director at QPR woulnd't allow it - Magilton has no say in transfers at all!, just to manage the players he gets.

superblueflude - whatever the case may be, we let go of one of our own when, in my view, it was just coming good. Jim was not the complete manager at ITFC, which was effectively admitted when Gorman joined the setup. Now where are we? - the only English club without a win to our name this season and a manager who is clearly looking for a helping hand. Sorry, but I don't call that progress.

superblueflude - of course you are right that we have a long way to go, but the signs are not good, particularly after the Plymouth game, which was another backward step after the promise of Watford. This contrasts with the tremendous character that Jim's team showed, coming back from two goals down against Derby on Saturday night, to maintain the unbeaten run. The comparisons are painful.

unbeaten run you say?
we're unbeaten in 3 now.
and so what we draw to Plymouth - AWAY! say we were winning even with Plymouth at the bottom we would still be saying a point away to plymouth would be a good result they put every man behind the ball etc etc.
Magilton is doing what hes good at - being a coach, not a manager not someone to control everything all he does is pick the team - keane has conrol of everything and he needs to see excactly what hes got, learn about everyone, the players the club etc.
give him time Nevada.

superblueflude - it would seem that the board's ongoing support of Keane means I will have to give him time. And if he does have control of everything as you say he does, I think I have every right to be concerned.

why - forget the league posistion and a couple of dodgy signings - we now have leadbitter edwards and rosenior, begovic is good, so could martin be - surely?!.
priskin will be to!.
but forget those to
the fact is our we have only lost 3 of the last 10 games!.

superblueflude - suffice it to say that we are bottom of the league and although the form has unquestionably improved overall, our inability to win games and put together a really consistent run of anything resembling winning form is very worrying. I said in a previous blog that I hope Mr Evans and his management team disprove my concerns and that remains my position. Enough said, I think.

I find it amazing how such recent history is constantly being rewritten! We all wanted Jim to succeed but he had completely lost his way and the team was going nowhere. The match vs Norwich was no different except for the very poor opposition. I am glad things are going well hor him at QPR but, as mentioned, he has not bought anyone yet and relative success at QPR does not change the correctness of the decision to let him go. Furthermore the current poor state of the team does not change the validity of the decision regarding Jim it is now just about Keane's poor performance thus far and how long he is given.

I too find it amazing that people are so critical of Jim, when in actual fact he started with zero experience, a lot of enthusiasm and a transfer fund of less than two weevils and a ship's biscuit under the previous regime. The team that everyone says was going nowhere last season actually finished in 9th place in the table, a final position at the end of this season that I'll bet every single ITFC fan would almost kill for right now. We seem to be allowing Keane multiple opportunities to hang himself and decry the recent excellent achievements since leaving the club of an Ipswich Town legend. It all seems to be a case of the emperor's new clothes to me and it surprises me that people can be so trusting of someone who has only given us wins with Jim's legacy team. I just hope Keane can prove me totally wrong - but he'd better get a move on!

BlueBadger - nice Woody Gutherie style guitar avatar.

It is not unknown for young managers to look for help - perhaps the club & Roy thinks we need it? John Gorman I rate and he did okay here - twice. He is obviously doing a decent job with Jim - an older footballing man / coach and a new boy. Maybe this is the way forward, a mixing of the two worlds - the old and the new.

Roy's his own man and Clegg & Evans obviously back him - they have to or else they will look like clowns. He'll be given time, of that there's no doubt.

Things will be turned around. And if an older, experienced head comes in to assist Roy - that's all it will be (sorry conspiracy theorists) and hopefully this added nouse will help our cause.

Jim has no say in any transfers brought into QPR...hmmmmm interesting that considering QPR paid three million for a south american that JM had scouted while at Ipswich....but of course QPR were already going to buy him weren't they? As for the rest of blog afraid its the same old doom anf gloom we are hearing from a very vocal minority and is getting tedious to say the least.

This isn't a blog is it? It's another biased rant dressed up as one. Poor effort, I wonder if you'd criticise the club for not being seen to be trying to get us out of the mire?

I think the one big mistake 3 and a bit years ago when Jim was given the job was that he wasn't given an experienced right hand man to start off with..Bryan Klug had done wonders with the youth teams but had no experience of first team football..we should've either kept Joe Royle on to help Jim out seeing as it was his first job or brought in someone like a Jim Smith to help Magilton out.

I'm no fan of Keane but I do think he seems to be taking most of the stick for the shambles we're in..how much of this mess is down to his coaching set up?

I personally gave him october to turn it around - the signs are that he's not doing that - scraping the odd point versus the likes of doncaster, watford & plymouth is nowhere near good enough.

3 points is an absolute must vs Derby.

Mullet - I would argue that any blog probably should have a bias, otherwise the writer is trying to be fair to everyone and not really making his/her own opinions clear - which I kind of thought was the whole idea! If you disagree then either say why in the comments or write your own blog. And you have also misunderstood me if you consider I'm criticising the club for not trying to improve things as they are. As I said in the second paragraph, there's nothing wrong with strengthening the coaching team of any side. It is a key issue and concern that we got rid of Jim and his replacement has underperformed up to now. Like you and every other fan, I hope that changes from today.
